Why Should You Quit Smoking?

Smoking is one of the biggest causes of death and illness in the UK. Approximately 100,000 people each year die from smoking, much more living with serious smoking-related illnesses.

Smoking increases your risk of developing more than 50 serious health conditions. Some may be fatal and others can cause irreversible long-term damage to your health. Smoking-associated illnesses can arise if whether your smoke yourself or inhale smoke from somebody nearby (passive smoking).

Smoking causes about 90% of lung cancers. It also causes many other forms of cancer such as:

Smoking damages your heart and your blood circulation, increasing your risk of developing conditions such as coronary heart disease, stroke, and heart attack. The long-term effects are damaged blood vessels (peripheral vascular disease) and damaged arteries that supply blood to your brain (cerebrovascular disease).

Damage to the lungs can cause cancer but smoking can also lead to conditions like:
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which incorporates bronchitis and emphysema

If you are asthmatic and smoke, your symptoms can be prolonged and your condition deteriorate. The same goes if you are suffering from the common cold and decide to smoke simultaneously.

In men, smoking can cause impotence because it limits the blood supply to the penis. It can also decrease the fertility of both men and women.

When a nearby individual smokes and you inhale the smoke that he/she has breathed, you are breathing in secondhand smoke ie passive smoking. This can increase the risk of getting the same health conditions as smokers so should be treated with the same degree of caution.

Babies and children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of secondhand smoke. A child who is exposed to passive smoke is at increased risk of developing chest infections, meningitis, a persistent cough and, if they have asthma, their symptoms will get worse. They're also at increased risk of cot death and an ear infection called glue ear.

If you smoke when you're pregnant, you put your unborn baby's health at risk, as well as your own. Smoking during pregnancy increases the risk of complications such as:
Premature birth
A low birth weight baby

How does the treatment work?

Champix contains a nicotine free medication (varenicline tartrate) derived from plant sources which help adults quit smoking. Champix does not contain nicotine and therefore is not addictive. Instead, it mimics the action of nicotine in the brain to help reduce cravings and the withdrawal effect of when you stop smoking. Some of the benefits of using Champix are:
Proven reduction in nicotine cravings
Reduced stress, anxiety and irritability
Fewer sleep problems

Nicotine has its effect by attaching to receptors in brain cells to stimulate that part of the brain. So, if you smoke while on Champix, you may experience flattened feelings of satisfaction and not find the experience as pleasurable as usual. This can reinforce the reasons for quitting smoking and reduce the desire to have another cigarette in the future.

When smoking, the receptors in your brain that associate with nicotine sends a message to a different part of your brain to release the chemical mediator dopamine. Dopamine gives you a feeling of pleasure but it is a short-lived feeling. This is why your body craves more nicotine, resulting in a vicious and addictive cycle.

Champix partially stimulates these nicotine receptors, therefore having a similar effect to nicotine, which can help reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms when you stop smoking. When Champix attaches to these receptors, it blocks nicotine from attaching to these sites, therefore ultimately reducing the effect of nicotine in those people who have a cigarette.

So, how effective is Champix? Champix has clinically proven to help people quit smoking. In a trial, 21 in 100 people who took Champix successfully stopped smoking compared to 8 in 100 who took a placebo (dummy) tablet. This shows taking Champix more than doubled the number of people who took a placebo.

It is the first of its kind to have a dual action of both reducing the urge to smoke and relieving withdrawal symptoms. Champix is effective in helping people quit smoking when nicotine replacement therapy has not been effective or is not appropriate. For best results, Champix should be used by adults in combination with professional counseling and quit-smoking education.
