What is Period Delay?

Occasionally, there may be times when you want to delay your period as it may be due at a time that is inconvenient. You may be going on holiday, it might be exam time, you could be giving an important presentation or anticipating a special event such as your honeymoon.

Periods can be delayed naturally or accidentally from routine change, illness, stress, medications, excessive workouts and weight problems. Missed periods can also be an indicator of pregnancy.

How does the treatment work?

Your period can be delayed in more than one way. If you are already taking a combined contraceptive pill, there is the option of taking two pill packs with no break. This depends on the type of pill you are taking. If you are taking a monophasic 21 day contraceptive, you can start a new pack of pills straight away without having the seven day break in between.

If you are taking the daily pill, you can omit the seven inactive pills at the end of your current course and start the active pills in a new pack instead. If you are on a phasic pill, the hormone mix in your tablets will vary depending on the phase you are in. In this instance, you can seek advice from your GP. If you are not on a combined pill, you have the choice of taking Norethisterone, a prescription medicine licensed for period delay. This medicine contains a synthetic version of the hormone progesterone and works by maintaining high levels of natural progesterone, which prevents your womb lining from shedding thus delaying bleeding.

We offer Norethisterone and you can find out more about this
treatment above. Further questions or queries can be handled by getting in touch with the SmartMeds Team.
