What is Migraine?

SmartMeds Chemist Migraine

A migraine is a common health condition affecting around one in every five women and one in every 15 men in the UK. It is thought that a migraine is caused by the temporary swelling of blood vessels in the brain, leading to an increased blood supply to the brain and therefore causing migraine symptoms.

The most common type of a migraine is one with aura, where there are specific warning signs just before a migraine begins. These include seeing flashing lights or increased sensitivity to bright light and loud sounds. Nausea and vomiting are also common and typical symptoms of a migraine.

The most common types of a migraine include a migraine without aura and a migraine with aura.

A migraine without Aura
The most common symptoms are:
Intense throbbing headache, usually on side of the head, which is made worse by
movement and can last anything up to 72 hours
Nausea with/without vomiting
Sensitivity to light, noise and in some cases smell

Migraine with Aura
Migraine with Aura refers to a range of neurological changes that occur before a headache comes on. Common symptoms are:
Blind spots
Flashing lights

Once the aura phase is over, symptoms are usually similar to a migraine without aura.
Some people may suffer from migraines frequently (more than 5 days per month) which can be controlled by medication. However, it is recommended to consult your GP if this is the case as you may benefit from preventive therapy.

Other less common types of migraines include:
Migraine aura without a headache
A basilar Migraine
A hemiplegic Migraine
An ophthalmoplegic Migraine
A vestibular Migraine

Treatments offered by Smartmeds Chemist do not cover the above types of migraines. If you suffer from any of these, you must see your GP for further treatment.

How does the treatment work?

The most common medication used to treat a migraine is a group of medication called
Triptans. They act on the serotonin receptors and belong to
a class of medicines called 5HT- receptor agonists.

A migraine occurs when blood vessels in the brain widen and Triptans act by reversing this temporary widening of the blood vessels. This relieves the pain and other symptoms of a migraine.
