What is Hayfever?

Hayfever (also known as Allergic rhinitis) is a type of inflammation in the nose which occurs when the immune system becomes oversensitive to pollen. Hayfever is one of the most common allergic conditions and most people tend to suffer between March and September when the pollen count is at its highest as it is warm, humid and windy.

Symptom onset is often within minutes following exposure and they can affect sleep, the ability to work, and the ability to concentrate.

So, how do symptoms occur? the classic signs of hayfever arise in response to irritants like dust, animal fur and pollen that cause the inside of your nose to become swollen and inflamed. Symptoms include:
A runny or stuffy nose (The fluid from the nose is usually clear)
Red, itchy, and watery eyes, as well as swelling

Unfortunately, hayfever cannot be cured but most people respond well to treatment with medication. Some people may suffer from these symptoms throughout the year and require regular treatment to help control the symptoms of their hayfever.

You can try our antihistamine therapy to control your allergic reactions. We have a selection of branded and proprietary medication available.

How does the treatment work?

Before considering medication, there are things you can try to help control your symptoms as this may be all you need.

You can monitor pollen levels daily and avoid going out when the count is reported high (this is usually on warmer, drier days as rain washes the pollen away so the pollen levels on wet days are significantly lower).

If you are out on high pollen days then be sure to wash your hair and change your clothes when you get in. This will remove any trapped pollen which can continue to
cause symptoms even when indoors.

A medicinal method of controlling your hayfever is to take an antihistamine such as T
elfast, which also has a generic name called Fexofenadine. This is a prescription only medication to aid in the non-drowsy and quick relief for hayfever allergies and its symptoms.

Each Telfast tablet has a dosage of 120mg and contains fexofenadine hydrochloride (HCl) as its active ingredient. This active ingredient is a non-sedating antihistamine.

A useful method of controlling your hayfever symptoms without taking medication is to apply Vaseline around your nostrils to trap pollen. Staying indoors will limit your contact with pollen and it is also important to keep windows and doors closed as much as possible.

You may have come across the brand name Allegra in whilst browsing the web for hayfever therapy. Allegra is another brand name for the active ingredient fexofenadine hydrochloride. Allegra is only available in the US, but it is sold in the UK under the name Telfast.
