What is Flu?

Flu is a very contagious respiratory illness that spreads fast and is caused by a group of viruses through coughing and sneezing. Flu is different to a cold as the symptoms come on much quicker and can last longer than those of a cold.

Common Flu symptoms include:
Fever (temperature higher than 38’c)
Body aches and pains
Weakness and tiredness
A headache
A dry or a chesty cough

People suffering from the flu can also have symptoms of a common cold but they tend to be less severe than the symptoms of a Flu:
Common Cold symptoms
Blocked or a runny nose
A sore throat

Flu can make you feel so exhausted and unwell that you have to stay in bed and rest until you feel better.

Flu can cause mild to severe illness and in rare cases lead to death.  Most people who get the flu will recover in several days to less than two weeks, but some people will develop complications as a result of the flu.

A wide range of complications can be caused by the flu virus infection and while anyone can get sick with flu and become severely ill, some people are more likely to experience severe flu illness. Young children, adults aged 65 years and older, pregnant women, and people with certain chronic medical conditions are among those groups of people who are at high risk of serious flu complications, possibly requiring hospitalization.

How does the treatment work?

Tamiflu is a medication used to treat and even prevent flu in adults, adolescents, children, and infants. Tamiflu contains the active ingredient oseltamivir, which belongs to a group of medicines called neuraminidase inhibitors. They prevent the flu virus from spreading in the body while easing or preventing the symptoms of a flu virus infection.

Tamiflu works by binding to the virus particles and reduces its ability to spread to uninfected cells. This restricts the flu virus to a small number of cells. hence giving the body’s immune system a better chance at fighting the virus.
