What is Acid Reflux?

Acid reflux commonly occurs in one in five people. It can affect people of all ages, including children. It is most common in adults aged 40 and over and occurs more in men than in women. Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid leaks out of the stomach and into the gullet (oesophagus), which is a long tube that runs from the mouth to the stomach. Acid reflux is most commonly caused by weakening of the lower sphincter muscles of the gullet.

The common symptoms are :
- Heartburn
- An unpleasant taste in the mouth
- Pain and difficulty in swallowing (dysphagia)

Most people respond well to treatment with medication and some people may require a long-term course of medication to control the symptoms of acid reflux.

How does the treatment work?

Before considering medication, consider making lifestyle changes to overcome acid reflux. You can try losing weight giving up smoking, reducing your intake of coffee and spicy meals and opting for smaller frequent meals rather than fewer large ones. It is important to understand that although there are prescription therapies to treat heartburn, SmartMeds Clinic cannot guarantee they will eradicate the condition. In this situation, you may have to consider surgical treatment and therefore speak to your GP.

You can choose from a selection from Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs), which work by reducing the amount of stomach acid produced. We offer Omeprazole, Losec (branded Omeprazole), Lansoprazole, Lansoprazole Orodispersible, Esomeprazole, Nexium (branded Esomprazole) and Pantoprazole. Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) are usually the first line of prescription treatment. PPIs work by reducing the amount of acid produced by the stomach and can be very effective. Examples that can be prescribed are omeprazole, Nexium or its generic version, esomeprazole, and Zoton FasTab (lansoprazole) which conveniently dissolve in the mouth.
