Zomig is a popular treatment for migraines and belongs to a family of medicines called Triptans. Zomig contains the active ingredient Zolmitriptan and this class of medicines are not painkillers but reverse the changes in the brain believed to the cause of migraines. Zomig also works to reduce the symptoms associated with migraines, including:
  • A headache
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Light and sound sensitivity

Zomig functions by energizing the receptors in the brain known as serotonin (5HT) and constricts the blood vessels in the brain. The tightening of the blood vessels counters the widening which is believed to cause migraines. Treatment, if initiated at the onset of a migraine can help re-establish normal daily routine and may even omit the need to for additional pain medication. Zomig does not prevent future migraines or reduce the frequency of migraine occurrence.

Zomig is also available as non-branded Zolmitriptan, both of which equivalent in efficacy and strength and treats migraines in an identical manner. Zolmitriptan is available at a lower price than Zomig.
Zomig nasal spray comes in a ready-to-use spray unit which should be administered as soon as your migraine starts. Just a single spray into one nostril is necessary and it will begin to work in around 15 minutes.

Zomig is significantly effective within forty-five minutes to an hour of administering a dose and is known to last approximately two hours.

The following instructions can be followed on how to use Zomig nasal spray in the correct manner:
  • Before using, blow your nose gently
  • Remove the protective cover
  • Hold the nasal spray gently with your fingers gently but take care not to press the plunger yet
  • Block one nostril by pressing a finger on the side of your nose
  • Insert the nozzle of the nasal spray into the other nostril as far it feels comfortable
  • Tilt your head back slightly and close your mouth
  • Breathe in gently through your nose and at the same time press the plunger firmly with your thumb. The plunger may feel stiff and you may hear it click
  • Keep your head slightly tilted back
  • Remove the nozzle from your nose
  • Breathe gently through your mouth for five-ten seconds
  • You may feel some liquid inside your nose or a drip down your throat. This does not mean that the dose has been wasted failed. In fact, it is a normal sensation and will soon subside

In the event that you forget to take a dose of Zomig, do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.
  • Chest tightness
  • Throat tightness
