The Ventolin asthma inhaler contains the active drug, salbutamol, and helps to relieve symptoms of asthma attack or difficulty breathing.

It is very effective and works quickly, making it extremely useful for people that suffer from asthma. It is an inhaled drug and helps by relaxing the airways to enable easier breathing and can help to relieve an acute asthma attack.

The active ingredient, Salbutamol is known as a bronchodilator and works by relaxing the muscles around the airways. Salbutamol is inhaled to provide immediate relief, which is the reason it is such as popular therapy for asthma symptoms.

Ventolin is great for treating asthma symptoms but should not be relief upon for long term close of asthma. You should speak to your GP if you are a chronic asthmatic, as you may need additional therapy not provided by SmartMeds Clinic.
Ventolin is a drug that should be inhaled to help you breathe when you are suffering from asthma symptoms. It can take some coordination in order to use the inhaler properly and get the most out of the drug, but it is essential you know how to do it and practice to do it right. This is a guide of how to use your Ventolin asthma inhaler:
  • Remove the cap and shake inhaler before use.
  • Take a normal breath and breathe out completely.
  • Put your mouth over the mouthpiece and seal with your lips to prevent air escaping.
  • Start taking a slow deep breath in, then press down the canister button at the top of the inhaler and continue to breathe in as deeply as you can.
  • Hold your breath for 10 seconds to allow the drug time to work in your airways and then exhale slowly.
This is how to take one puff - usually people will need more than one puff to relieve their symptoms. You should talk to you doctor about how many puffs you will need to take to relieve your symptoms.

You can take one or two puffs upto four times each day when required.

Ventolin does not need to be taken regularly every day, as it is designed to provide relief of symptoms when they affect you, not to prevent asthma.

You may benefit from purchasing a spacer device alongside your Ventolin. A spacer helps coordinate your breathing during dose administration so you achieve the desired dosage. Some people find it difficult correcting their breathing whilst taking a Ventolin inhaler, so a spacer is designed to help with this.

A spacer device is used as follows:
  • Ensure you have read the patient information leaflet before using your spacer.
  • Remove cap and shake your inhaler before use
  • Insert inhaler into the end of the spacer and breathe out away from spacer
  • Place your mouth over the mouthpiece and close with your lips to prevent air escaping
  • Press down the canister button at the top of your inhaler to administer medication into the spacer
  • Breathe in slowly and deeply
  • Allow ten seconds for the medicine to work in your airways by holding your breath and then slowly breathe out
  • You can can repeat the above steps for a second puff of your Ventolin inhaler
  • Increased heart rate/palpitations
  • Muscle tremor (shaking of the hands)
  • Anxiety

There are other medications available that will control your asthma symptoms for the long-term. If you are experiencing asthma symptoms regularly, you should talk to your GP about the need to introduce preventative medication as part of your care plan. This would include a steroid inhaler in conjunction with Ventolin, the latter of which you will still use for immediate relief.
