Sumatriptan

Omeprazole capsules
SmartMeds Chemist Sumtratriptan 100mg
A fast-acting medicine to manage migraines. And it's our most popular one too!
Sumatriptan is a popular migraine treatment. It is the generic version of Imigran and contains active ingredient sumatriptan succinate. Sumatriptan belongs to a class of medications known as triptans. Triptans work differently to painkilling medicines-instead of targetting direct pain relief, triptans work to reverse the changes in the brain that are thought to induce and trigger a migraine attack. They also treat the symptoms associated with a migraine.

As previously mentioned, the branded version of sumatriptan is Imigran. It contains the same active ingredient as its generic counterpart but is offered at a higher price.

Sumatriptan succinate is thought to reverse the temporary widening of blood vessels in the brain. The widening of these blood vessels is thought to contribute to a migraine attack. Sumatriptan stimulates serotonin (or 5HT) receptors in the brain, causing blood vessel contraction and ultimately treating the cause of a migraine, as well as associated symptoms such as:
  • A headache
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light or sound
Sumatriptan works to treat a migraine, not prevent it. Sumatriptan should be used when simple analgesics such as paracetamol, aspirin, ibuprofen or these simple analgesics combined with codeine are not effective. People suffering from less than ten episodes of a migraine each month can take sumatriptan. At the onset of a migraine attack, a dose of sumatriptan should be taken.

It does not matter if you take Sumatriptan with or without food. Take a sumatriptan tablet with water and at the onset of a migraine. At least two hours need to have elapsed before the second dose of sumatriptan and a second dose may only be taken if the first dose did not completely relieve migraine symptoms or resulted in a recurring headache.

You should not take a second Sumatriptan dose if the first dose did not work, but you can try taking Sumatriptan again for a future migraine.

  • Pain
  • Pressure or tightness in the chest and throat
  • Unusual sensations such as numbness and tingling
  • Nausea
  • Drowsiness
  • Dry mouth

Some symptoms may be caused by a migraine itself and particular side effects suffered vary from person to person. Sumatriptan is safe and effective for the majority of people who are eligible for treatment with it.

Overuse of medication used to treat migraines can cause a medication overuse headache or a rebound headache.
This is why it is very important that you speak to your doctor if you need to take more than ten doses of Sumatriptan tablets in a month. Your doctor may instead need to discuss prescribing you preventative medication that you can take regularly to help prevent migraines.

Some common side effects that may be associated with Sumatriptan can include nausea, vomiting, tiredness/drowsiness, or dizziness.

You can find out more about these symptoms or raise your concerns by speaking to your doctor or getting in touch with our experts.

Over the counter pain-killers such as paracetamol, aspirin or Nurofen may help to reduce the symptoms of migraines. They are most effective when taken as soon as a migraine starts.
