A popular treatment for a migraine is Rizatriptan, part of a family of medications called triptans Triptans are not the same as painkillers but rather work by reversing the changes in the brain which can cause migraines. This reversal mechanism, allows Rizatriptan to treat a migraine and also reduce the symptoms.

Rizatriptan works by targeting serotonin (5HT) receptors in the brain that cause blood vessel contraction. A migraine is triggered by blood vessel dilation in the brain, resulting in increased cranial pressure.

Although Rizatriptan and Sumatriptan belong to the same class of medication and work in similar fashion on blood vessel narrowing to treat a migraine, rizatriptan has been clinically proven to work faster than Sumatriptan. Consuming food however, will affect the actions of Sumatriptan less than Rizatriptan.
Rizatriptan is available as 10mg tablets and will begin to work about thirty minutes after being administered and the recommended dose is one tablet swallowed with water as soon as a migraine is anticipated. The speed of Rizatriptan absorption and hence rate of activity is increased if it is taken on an empty stomach. A dose can last approximately two-three hours.

If a migraine returns, another tablet can be taken, as long as two hours have passed since the first dose. If the first Rizatriptan tablet does not provide relief for a migraine, do not take a second for the same attack. The maximum number of Rizatriptan tablets that can be taken in a day is two and it is important to note that Rizatriptan does not prevent migraines.

Alternatively, an oral meltlet (a lyophilisate) is also available if swallowing is going to be a difficulty. If an aura is experienced (warning symptoms that a migraine is about to begin) Rizatriptan must not be taken during this phase, as it may not work.

Rizatriptan must not be taken with another Triptan when treating the same migraine attack. Rizatriptan should not be used on a daily basis, as this may lead to a medication overuse headache. If the symptoms get significantly worse or seem unusual, urgent medical care should be sought.
  • Drowsiness or Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Flushing
  • Racing heart
Like any medicines, Rizatriptan can cause side effects, but not everybody may experience them. Some symptoms may be caused by a migraine itself. Rare side effects should be reported as soon as possible and these include:
  • A slow heart-beat
  • Visual disturbances
  • Severe allergic reactions

You can find out more about these symptoms by speaking to your doctor or getting in touch with our experts.
