Norethisterone is a hormonal medication and contains synthetic progesterone. You can take it to delay your period for up to seventeen days. It works in a similar way to naturally occurring progesterone and will delay your period until the tablets are stopped. When taken, Norethisterone causes the womb lining to be sustained until the treatment is halted.

Norethisterone also helps to prevent a variety of menstrual cycle disorders such as pain and abnormally heavy bleeding.

Norethisterone will not protect against pregnancy, as it is not a contraceptive. You should use extra contraceptive methods during treatment or consider taking the combined oral contraceptive pill to prevent pregnancy, for which you should speak to your GP.

After stopping treatment with Norethisterone, your period may be delayed by a few days whilst your body
takestime to re-adjust to the hormone changes. We recommend you take a pregnancy test if you do not get your period within a week of stopping treatment, to rule out the possibility of pregnancy.
For period delay, you should take one 5mg tablet three times a day. You need to start treatment three days before your period is due. You can take it for up to seventeen days and when stopping, menstruation should re-commence two to three days following this.

Norethisterone should be taken at the same time each day and if you forget to take a tablet on one day, you can continue taking the regular dose on the following day or when your next dose is due. Avoid taking multiple doses together.

Norethisterone is very effective in period delay if taken at the prescribed dose. When
stopping treatment, your period will return in two to three days. Most women will have no vaginal bleeding whilst taking Norethisterone and a minor proportion of women may experience light bleeding.

You can find out more about these symptoms by speaking to your doctor or getting in touch with our experts.

We currently only offer Norethisterone as a treatment for period delay. You can use the contraceptive pill to stop periods but will need to take these for two months prior to chosen date of period delay. The contraceptive pill will need to be taken without the seven-day break. We recommend you speak to your GP if you wish to pursue this route or contact the SmartMeds team.
