Maxalt is the branded version of Rizatriptan, a selective serotonin  5-HT1B/1D receptor agonist. Maxalt belongs to the family of medicines called the Triptans and is used for treating migraines. Maxalt is used to treat the headache phase of the migraine attack in adults.

Researchers believe migraines are caused by swelling blood vessels in the brain and the release of chemicals that lead to head pain and other migraine symptoms. Maxalt, like other drugs in the triptan class, is believed to offer relief by narrowing the blood vessels and decreasing the pain-causing substances.

Maxalt Melt is used to not only treat migraines but also offer symptomatic relief, targetting on clinical signs like:

A headache
Nausea and vomiting
Sensitivity to light and sound

Prompt treatment helps you return to your normal routine and may decrease your need for other pain medications.
Maxalt Melt is available as 10mg orodispersible tablets that melt on the tongue and will begin to work about thirty minutes after being administered and the recommended dose is one tablet swallowed with water as soon as a migraine is anticipated. The speed of Maxalt absorption and hence rate of activity is increased if it is taken on an empty stomach.

Maxalt has the fastest onset of action out of all the Triptan therapies and being taking effect approximately thirty minutes after ingestion. A dose of Maxalt will last around two-three hours after administration.

If a migraine returns, another tablet can be taken, as long as two hours have passed since the first dose. If the first Rizatriptan tablet does not provide relief for a migraine, do not take a second for the same attack. The maximum number of Rizatriptan tablets that can be taken in a day is two and it is important to note that Rizatriptan does not prevent migraines.

Alternatively, an oral meltlet (a lyophilisate) is also available if swallowing is going to be a difficulty. If an aura is experienced (warning symptoms that a migraine is about to begin) Rizatriptan must not be taken during this phase, as it may not work.

Rizatriptan must not be taken with another Triptan when treating the same migraine attack. Rizatriptan should not be used on a daily basis, as this may lead to a medication overuse headache. If the symptoms get significantly worse or seem unusual, urgent medical care should be sought.
