SmartMedsClinics Lariam
Lariam is an affordable and effective medicine for preventing malaria. It is commonly used in areas where the type of malaria that is prevalent remains hard to treat.

This service is temporarily unavailable. Please check back at a later date.

Lariam is used to prevent or treat certain types of malaria. Lariam works by attacking the parasites once they have entered the red blood cells. It kills the parasites and prevents them from multiplying. The active ingredient in Lariam is mefloquine. Lariam is a prescription-only therapy, therefore will require you to complete our medical questionnaire.

It is unknown as to exactly how Lariam works to kill malaria parasites but it is important to note that this treatment does not prevent you from being bitten by a mosquito. Lariam kills the parasite after it has entered into your blood and may not be effective at protecting against all types of malaria.
You need to take Lariam with plenty of fluid and after a main meal. Do not take more than one tablet at any point. Lariam should not be taken on an empty stomach. If the tablet cannot be swallowed whole, it may be crushed or mixed in water, but ensure the whole dose is consumed.

Take one Lariam 250mg tablet each week with plenty of liquid. Start taking the tablets at least one week (and preferably two-three weeks) before entering the malaria area and continue until four weeks after leaving the area.

You must take the exact dose that has been prescribed to you. You can find out more information on dosages by downloading and reading the patient information leaflet provided. You can also ask the SmartMeds Team for further guidance.

As well as considering medicated therapy, you can follow the ABCD protocol for preventing Malaria:

A - Be aware when there is a risk, however, small
Find out if there is a malaria risk in the area you are visiting
To check whether you need to take preventative malaria treatment, see the Fit for Travel website
Aspects of travel may increase the risk e.g. rural travel or rainy season

B - Keep mosquito bites to a minimum
Use clothing to protect the skin, especially between dusk and dawn
Use DEET-based insect repellant
Sleep under a mosquito net that is impregnated with insecticide
If available, use air conditioning and vaporizers

C - Use antimalarials correctly
The antimalarial tablets recommended for you will depend on effectiveness, suitability, side effects, cost and regime
Tablets must be taken regularly according to the manufacturer’s instructions
Delayed illnesses - the incubation period of benign (mild) malaria may be long (up to a year or more)
You may need to take a supply of personal emergency treatment abroad with you if you are going to be remote from medical facilities, as treatment should always be started immediately. You can discuss your options with a Travel Advisor or feel free contact the SmartMeds Team for advice!

D - Report any feverish illness promptly to a doctor
If you experience any flu-like symptoms upon returning, seek immediate medical attention.
Remember to tell the doctor about your background and recent travel history (particularly within three months of return but even up to one year and mention you have visited a malarious area)
