If you are a sufferer of a migraine at a frequency of fewer than ten episodes a month, Imigran Nasal Spray is an ideal treatment. Imigran is a popular migraine treatment. It is the branded version of Sumatriptan and belongs to a class of medications known as triptans.

Triptans work differently to painkilling medicines-instead of targetting direct pain relief, triptans work to reverse the changes in the brain that are thought to induce and trigger a migraine attack. They also treat the symptoms associated with a migraine.

Imigran is thought to reverse the temporary widening of blood vessels in the brain. The widening of these blood vessels is thought to contribute to a migraine attack. Imigran stimulates serotonin (or 5HT) receptors in the brain, causing blood vessel contraction and ultimately treating the cause of a migraine, as well as associated symptoms such as:
  • A headache
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light or sound

So why take a nasal spray rather than a tablet? In terms of active ingredients and method of action, both formulations are identical. The difference is the onset of action. Imigran Nasal Spray will start working in about fifteen minutes, whereas Imigran Tablets takes around thirty-sixty minutes.
Spray the medication into one nostril and re-administer at least two hours after, if a migraine recurs. The maximum daily dose is 40mg and taking a second dose for the same attack must be refrained from.

The following instructions can be followed on how to use Imigran nasal spray in the correct manner:
  • Before using, blow your nose gently
  • Remove the protective cover
  • Hold the nasal spray gently with your fingers gently but take care not to press the plunger yet
  • Block one nostril by pressing a finger on the side of your nose
  • Insert the nozzle of the nasal spray into the other nostril as far it feels comfortable
  • Tilt your head back slightly and close your mouth
  • Breathe in gently through your nose and at the same time press the plunger firmly with your thumb. The plunger may feel stiff and you may hear it click
  • Keep your head slightly tilted back
  • Remove the nozzle from your nose
  • Breathe gently through your mouth for five-ten seconds
  • You may feel some liquid inside your nose or a drip down your throat. This does not mean that the dose has been wasted failed. In fact, it is a normal sensation and will soon subside.

In the event that you forget to take a dose of Imigran, do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

Like any medicines, Imigran Nasal Spray can cause side effects, but not everybody may experience them. Some symptoms may be caused by a migraine itself and are usually mild.

You can find out more about these symptoms by speaking to your doctor or getting in touch with our experts.
