Imigran is a popular migraine treatment. It is the branded version of Sumatriptan and belongs to a class of medications known as triptans. Triptans work differently to painkilling medicines-instead of targetting direct pain relief, triptans work to reverse the changes in the brain that are thought to induce and trigger a migraine attack. They also treat the symptoms associated with a migraine.

A generic version of Imigran is also available at SmartMeds Chemists at a lower price.

Imigran is thought to reverse the temporary widening of blood vessels in the brain. The widening of these blood vessels is thought to contribute to a migraine attack. Imigran stimulates serotonin (or 5HT) receptors in the brain, causing blood vessel contraction and ultimately treating the cause of a migraine, as well as associated symptoms such as:
  • A headache
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light or sound
Imigran works to treat a migraine, not prevent it. Imigran should be used when simple analgesics such as paracetamol, aspirin, ibuprofen or these simple analgesics combined with codeine are not effective. People suffering from less than ten episodes of a migraine each month can take Imigran. At the onset of a migraine attack, a dose of Imigran should be taken.

It does not matter if you take Imigran with or without food. Take an Imigran tablet with water and at the onset of a migraine. At least two hours need to have elapsed before the second dose of Imigran and a second dose may only be taken if the first dose did not completely relieve migraine symptoms or resulted in a recurring headache.

You should not take a second Imigran dose if the first dose did not work, but you can try taking Imigran again for a future migraine.
  • Pain
  • Pressure or tightness in the chest and throat
  • Unusual sensations such as numbness and tingling
  • Nausea
  • Drowsiness
  • Dry mouth
Some symptoms may be caused by a migraine itself and particular side effects suffered vary from person to person. Imigran is safe and effective for the majority of people who are eligible for treatment with it.

Overuse of medication used to treat migraines can cause a medication overuse headache or a rebound headache.  This is why it is very important that you speak to your doctor if you need to take more than ten doses of Imigran tablets in a month. Your doctor may instead need to discuss prescribing you preventative medication that you can take regularly to help prevent migraines.

Some common side effects that may be associated with Imigran can include nausea, vomiting, tiredness/drowsiness, or dizziness.

You can find out more about these symptoms or raise your concerns by speaking to your doctor or getting in touch with our experts.

Over the counter pain-killers such as paracetamol, aspirin or Nurofen may help to reduce the symptoms of migraines. They are most effective when taken as soon as a migraine starts.
