Generic Malarone

Generic Malarone tablets
Generic Malarone is a popular therapy for preventing and treating malaria. It has few side effects and can be started at short notice prior to traveling.
Generic Malarone is an effective and popular antimalarial treatment. It is a non-branded version and contains two medicines, atovaquone, and proguanil hydrochloride. Both work in different ways to ultimately killing the malaria parasite (Plasmodium falciparum), which stops infection.

The mechanism of action for generic Malarone is two-fold. The parasites that cause malaria need specific enzymes to replicate. Proguanil targets and blocks this enzyme, whilst atovaquone interferes with the parasite’s reproductive process. This combination of mechanisms creates a hostile situation for the infection to spread, making treatment and preventative therapy highly effective.

Generic Malarone is used in both the treatment and prevention of malaria, a potentially fatal disease caused by parasites. Atovaquone does not function on its own so will always be coupled with proguanil for the best results. As a combination, this therapy is highly effective in preventing malaria infections. We also offer a branded version (click here).
Generic Malarone should be taken with food or a milky drink at about the same time each day. A fatty meal would be preferable, as this allows for optimal medicine absorption. This therapy is to be taken at the same time each day.

It is also important to take measures to protect yourself from mosquito bites, such as using insect repellent, wearing suitable clothing and using mosquito nets at night.

We offer generic Malarone tablets for adults only. One tablet of generic Malarone contains 250 mg of atovaquone and 100 mg of proguanil hydrochloride.

If you are taking generic Malarone for treatment purposes, the recommended dose is one tablet per day for three days. If you are taking this treatment for malaria prevention, you should take one tablet each day starting one or two days before you are scheduled to arrive in the malarious area. Continue to take the medicine for the duration of your stay and for an additional seven days after you leave.

You must take the exact dose that has been prescribed to you. You can find out more information on dosages by downloading and reading the patient information leaflet provided. You can also ask the SmartMeds Team for further guidance.

As well as considering medicated therapy, you can follow the ABCD protocol for preventing Malaria:

A - Be aware when there is a risk, however, small
Find out if there is a malaria risk in the area you are visiting
To check whether you need to take preventative malaria treatment, see the Fit for Travel website
Aspects of travel may increase the risk e.g. rural travel or rainy season

B - Keep mosquito bites to a minimum
Use clothing to protect the skin, especially between dusk and dawn
Use DEET-based insect repellant
Sleep under a mosquito net that is impregnated with insecticide
If available, use air conditioning and vaporizers

C - Use antimalarials correctly
The antimalarial tablets recommended for you will depend on effectiveness, suitability, side effects, cost and regime
Tablets must be taken regularly according to the manufacturer’s instructions
Delayed illnesses - the incubation period of benign (mild) malaria may be long (up to a year or more)
You may need to take a supply of personal emergency treatment abroad with you if you are going to be remote from medical facilities, as treatment should always be started immediately. You can discuss your options with a Travel Advisor or feel free contact the SmartMeds Team for advice!

D - Report any feverish illness promptly to a doctor
If you experience any flu-like symptoms upon returning, seek immediate medical attention.
Remember to tell the doctor about your background and recent travel history (particularly within three months of return but even up to one year and mention you have visited a malarious area)
