Famciclovir Tablets are used to treat genital herpes viral infections in adults. Genital herpes is a viral infection caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 or 2. It is normally spread by sexual contact and causes blisters, itching and burning around the genitals, all of which can be painful. People who suffer from frequent episodes of genital herpes can also take famciclovir to help prevent the attacks.

Through symptomatic relief, famciclovir can offer you the following benefits:
  • Pain relief
  • Relief of itching and burning sensation
  • An overall increase in speed of the healing time

Famciclovir is not a cure for herpes and will not prevent the spread of the infection. When you feel the onset of genital herpes symptoms, abstain from sex and always use a condom during sexual intercourse even while on suppression treatment. This way, you will minimize the risk of passing on the infection to your partner.

You may have come across another treatment for genital herpes called Famvir. This is the branded version of famciclovir and in terms of effectiveness and strength, the two are identical. What differs between them is the price-generic valaciclovir is available at a lower price.

If you are concerned about whether to go for a generic or branded version, it is important to understand that all medicines (generic and branded) are required to a standard of safety, quality, and efficacy. The European Medicines Agency and Medicines Health and Regulatory Agency grant market approval for all medicines in the UK and one of the prerequisites is that a generic medicine must be equivalent to its branded counterpart.

Genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1 or 2 and usually spreads through sexual contact. Clinical manifestations present around the genitals and include:
  • Blisters
  • Burning or itching sensation
  • Pain
Famciclovir present as 125mg tablets. To treat an outbreak, take one tablet twice daily for five days. Swallow the tablet whole with water. You should begin the treatment as soon as you notice symptoms of an outbreak, as this will aid effectiveness.

The effect of famciclovir has not been reported to be compromised suffer in the presence of food, so it can be taken with or without food.

If you miss a dose of famciclovir, take a tablet as soon as you remember. However, if it is too close to the next dose, you should skip the forgotten dose to avoid taking double the medication.

Some people may benefit from adopting a set of self-care measure:
  • Clean the affected area with plain or salt water to help prevent secondary infection and promote healing of lesions.
  • Apply Vaseline or a topical anesthetic (e.g. lidocaine 5%) to lesions to help with painful urination, if required.
  • Increase fluid intake to produce dilute urine (which is less painful to void). Urinate in a bath or with water flowing over the area to reduce stinging.
  • Avoid wearing tight clothing, as this may irritate lesions and use adequate pain relief (e.g. oral paracetamol).
  • Avoid sharing towels and flannels with household members (although it is very unlikely that the virus would survive on an object long enough to be passed on, it is sensible to take steps to prevent this).
  • Try and avoid trigger factors such as ultraviolet light and excess alcohol.
