Epiduo is an effective prescription gel that works to treat acne and prevent new spots from forming. The product is applied to affected areas of the body and contains two active ingredients: adapalene and benzoyl peroxide.

Adapalene is medicinally classified as a retinoid and possesses anti-inflammatory characteristics. Adapalene also works to unblock the pores, thus reducing the prevalence of whiteheads and blackheads. Benzoyl peroxide has antibacterial properties and works to soften and shed the outer layer of the skin. It also counteracts the excessive secretion of sebum that commonly occurs with acne.
Epiduo presents as a gel type formulation and should be applied gently with clean fingertips to the acne-affected region once daily in the evening, ensuring the affected skin is clean and dry. Epiduo should be applied sparingly, avoiding the eyes and mouth. Ensure the hands are washed before and after application and be mindful that excess application will not improve the effects but actually increase the side effects of Epiduo.

Using Epiduo regularly for 1-4 weeks will give positive results and treatment should be continued, as acne improves over time.
  • Dry skin
  • Skin rash
  • Burning sensation
  • Irritated skin
  • Redness
  • Scaling

Common side effects listed above affect one in ten people and usually diminish after the first week of treatment. If you find applying Epiduo to be aggravating, wash your skin and apply non-spot forming cream to relieve the symptoms.

There are several therapies for acne that do not require you to take medication:
  • Comedone extractor - a small pen-shaped instrument that is used to clean out blackheads and whiteheads
  • Chemical peels - a chemical solution is applied to the affected area, causing the skin to peel and be replaced with new skin
  • Photodynamic therapy - light is applied to the skin to improve acne symptoms

It is important to note here that these therapies may not work routinely. A therapy that became a popular internet myth is the application of toothpaste on individual spots. Toothpaste contains antibacterial ingredients and supposedly works to dry up acne spots, but it can also damage the skin and is not recommended.
