Duac

smartmeds clinic duac
A double action prescription-only treatment for acne. Duac contains benzoyl peroxide and an antibiotic called clindamycin
An effective gel treatment for acne, Duac works to combat acne-causing bacteria and reduce existing spots.  Duac is used for mild to moderate acne vulgaris and belongs to a class of therapies called ‘anti-acne preparations’.

Duac’s approach to treating acne is two-fold:
Antibiotic activity from Clindamycin, which stops acne-causing bacteria from reproducing
Reduction of whiteheads and blackheads from benzoyl peroxide, an antibacterial and keratolytic (peeling) agent

This two-pronged approach allows Duac to fight acne-causing bacteria, treat existing blackheads and reduce red and inflamed acne spots, thus making this therapy highly effective and targeted.
Duac contains an antibiotic Clindamycin phosphate and a peeling agent Benzoyl peroxide. The procedure must be carefully followed to ensure you get the most benefit from this dual therapy.

Wash your face using a mild cleanser so that it is free of all makeup and gently pat it dry. Apply a thin layer of gel to the affected area once daily, ensuring you rub the product in with your fingertips and keep away from your mouth, lips and nose. Wash your hands thoroughly after applying the gel but do not wash any gel residue from the affected area-allow the gel to dry on the skin.

Duac has a maximum daily dosage of once and must be used sparingly. Excess usage will cause skin irritation and not make your acne any better.

The effects of duac will become apparent in about 2-5 weeks of regular daily use, with a full potential being reach after about 8-12 weeks. You should not use this product for more than 12 weeks

Prior to purchase, Duac is stored in the refrigerator. Once you receive the item, you can store it at room temperature but must remember to discard it after two months at your nearest pharmacy.
  • Skin peeling and reddening
  • A burning sensation
  • Headaches during the first few weeks of therapy

Duac can reduce the effectiveness of other acne medications if used simultaneously, including tretinoin, isotretinoin and tazarotene.

Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight, as benzoyl peroxide can raise your light sensitivity.

You can find out more about these symptoms by speaking to your doctor or getting in touch with our experts.

There are several therapies for acne that do not require you to take medication:
  • Comedone extractor - a small pen-shaped instrument that is used to clean out blackheads and whiteheads
  • Chemical peels - a chemical solution is applied to the affected area, causing the skin to peel and be replaced with new skin
  • Photodynamic therapy - light is applied to the skin to improve acne symptoms

It is important to note here that these therapies may not work routinely. A therapy that became a popular internet myth is the application of toothpaste on individual spots. Toothpaste contains antibacterial ingredients and supposedly works to dry up acne spots, but it can also damage the skin and is not recommended.
