Champix contains a nicotine free medication (varenicline tartrate) derived from plant sources which help adults quit smoking. Champix does not contain nicotine and therefore is not addictive. Instead, it mimics the action of nicotine in the brain to help reduce cravings and the withdrawal effect of when you stop smoking. Some of the benefits of using Champix are:
  • Proven reduction in nicotine cravings
  • Reduced stress, anxiety and irritability
  • Fewer sleep problems

Nicotine has its effect by attaching to receptors in brain cells to stimulate that part of the brain. So, if you smoke while on Champix, you may experience flattened feelings of satisfaction and not find the experience as pleasurable as usual. This can reinforce the reasons for quitting smoking and reduce the desire to have another cigarette in the future.

When smoking, the receptors in your brain that associate with nicotine sends a message to a different part of your brain to release the chemical mediator dopamine. Dopamine gives you a feeling of pleasure but it is a short-lived feeling. This is why your body craves more nicotine, resulting in a vicious and addictive cycle.

Champix partially stimulates these nicotine receptors, therefore having a similar effect to nicotine, which can help reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms when you stop smoking. When Champix attaches to these receptors, it blocks nicotine from attaching to these sites, therefore ultimately reducing the effect of nicotine in those people who have a cigarette.

So, how effective is Champix? Champix has clinically proven to help people quit smoking. In a trial, 21 in 100 people who took Champix successfully stopped smoking compared to 8 in 100 who took a placebo (dummy) tablet. This shows taking Champix more than doubled the number of people who took a placebo.

It is the first of its kind to have a dual action of both reducing the urge to smoke and relieving withdrawal symptoms. Champix is effective in helping people quit smoking when nicotine replacement therapy has not been effective or is not appropriate. For best results, Champix should be used by adults in combination with professional counseling and quit-smoking education.
Champix is a tablet that needs to be taken on a daily basis. Champix comes packaged securely with each day's dosage clearly labeled on the box so you know exactly how many tablets to take each day and when to them. You must take Champix as prescribed by your doctor.

You need to start taking Champix one week before your intended quit date. This is to lay the foundation, so to say and prepare your body for the treatment. A 12-week Champix schedule includes 1 Starting Month Box and 2 Continuing Month Boxes. Each monthly boxes contain 4 weekly doses of Champix.

In the first week during days 1-3, take one white tablet daily. During days 4-7, take two white tablets daily (one in the morning and one in the evening). During weeks 2-12, take two blue tablets daily (one in the morning and one in the evening).

This treatment time is 12 weeks. If you have successfully managed to stop smoking after 12 weeks, then you should take Champix 1mg once daily to maintain abstinence. The total treatment time is 24 weeks.

Days 1-3 0.5mg once daily (white tablet)
Days 4-7 0.5mg twice daily (white tablet)
Day 8-end of treatment 1mg twice daily (light blue tablet)

Take Champix with a full glass of water, preferably after your main mean. You should try and take Champix tablets at the same time each day and if you forget to take a dose, do not take a double dose to compensate.

A small number of users will require a gradual tapering off the Champix dose over the course of a week or so as 3% of users have been identified with increased irritability or an urge to smoke again, depression or sleeping problems after withdrawing abruptly. These symptoms can be reduced by tapering off the Champix dose over one week.

If after 12 weeks you have not managed to quit smoking, then do not continue with the treatment as it may not be working for you. In this circumstance, other smoking cessation programs are advised.

Zyban (Bupropion Hydrochloride) is a medicine that helps you to stop smoking. It presents as a tablet and can cause more side effects than Champix. This coupled with its lower effectiveness to combat smoking than Champix makes Zyban a less favorable option in both primary and secondary care.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy reduces craving for cigarettes but still contains nicotine. It is not as effective as Champix but normally used in conjunction with the latter.

Non-Medical therapies include:
  • Counseling
  • Hypnotherapy
  • Acupuncture
